Publishing industry
Article Abstract:
Cost control, rather than revenue expansion, has become important to the publishing industry, as there is little growth in demand in the traditional print markets. However, educational publishing has become a positive segment of the industry, and revenue has also increased for some of the periodical publishers. There are few timely stocks in this industry, which is expected to underperform the market in 1998, and investors must be selective.

Drug industry
Article Abstract:
Macroeconomic factors and strong earnings allowed 10 large-capitalized drug companies to outperform the market in 1997, gaining about 57%, some soaring 80% or more. Price flexibility and good performance by several of the drug multinationals also helped stock prices. However, expiring drug patents, the Asian financial crisis, and the uncertainty over consolidation should make investors cautious about drug company stocks in the late 1990s.
