Optimal operating policy for a bottleneck with random rework

Article Abstract:

A stochastic model of a manufacturing system that has a single bottleneck stage is presented. In this model, the bottleneck facility performs two different kinds of operations: 'regular' and 'rework.' Regular jobs are those that arrive at the bottleneck stage, pass a test after undergoing the regular operation at the bottleneck, and proceed to the next processing stages downstream. Rework jobs are those that fail the test after completing the operation at the bottleneck stage and are returned to the bottleneck for rework. The analysis seeks to develop an optimal operating policy for the bottleneck that reduces the average operating costs. It presents a simple method for computing an optimal threshold policy and facilitates the study of how this policy is affected by batch size, yield and different cost factors.

Optimal batch sizing and repair strategies for operations with repairable jobs

Article Abstract:

A model of a bottleneck facility that performs regular operations and repair operations is presented. Under this system, switch-over time and cost are generated when the facility switches from doing one type of operation to the other. When a a batch of jobs is completed in the regular operation, each batch will undergo testing, during which the whole batch will be grouped into three categories: nondefective, repairable and nonrepairable. To allow the bottleneck facility to optimize the long-term average operating profit, an optimal repair policy is developed. It takes one of the two forms: a repair-none policy where all repairable batches are discarded, and a repair-all policy where all repairable batches are repaired. Optimality conditions for each of the two policy modes are then identified.
