Microsoft offers prizes to identify orders of PCs without Windows

Microsoft Corp. is trying to get computer makers to tattle on customers who try to order computers without Windows, by offering prizes. Microsoft characterizes the 'contest' as a 'pilot program.' Some analysts question whether most firms would agree with Microsoft's interpretation of the license as permitting upgrades only to systems that already have Windows installed, because some firms may feel thay are being charged twice for the software.

Windows XP sales to begin Oct. 25, Microsoft says

Microsoft Corp.'s new Windows XP operating system will be in stores Ocotber 25. The new system will run on systems purchased since the 1999 holiday season, which leaves out most personal computers that currently use Windows 95 and Windows 98, since most of those systems haven't the requisite 128 megabytes of memory suggested for Windows XP. Microsoft hopes that consumers will rush out and buy new computers just so they can have Windows XP, and plans to spend hundreds of millions of dollars marketing the product for four months starting in October.
