Microsoft Corp. acquired closely held Valence Research Inc. of Beaverton, OR, to bolster the abilities of its Windows NT operating system to handle high-volume Web sites by balancing the workload among as many as 32 computers. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. All 5 members of Valence's technical team, including both co-founders, William L. Bain and Kyril Faenov, will join Microsoft's Windows NT development team. The acquisition will speed the release of Windows NT 5.0, a major part of Microsoft's strategy to extend Windows to the biggest corporate computing jobs.

Cadence Design Systems Inc. announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire Ambit Design Systems Inc. for $260 million. The deal will merge two chip-design software manufacturers together. In the same week at the end of August 1998, Cadence also acquired Lucent Technologies Inc.'s Bell Labs unit for about $90 million. Cadence claims that its deal with Ambit will provide it with the most comprehensive chip-making software tool groupings in the industry.

Yes! Entertainment Corp. announced the resignation of Donald Kingsborough as chairman and CEO. The company has been plagued with major problems since 1996. Mark Shepherd has been appointed by Yes!'s board to replace Mr. Kingsborough. Mr. Shepherd will also be a member of the board. He will also continue to operate in his current position as chief operating officer. Mr. Shepherd is replacing David Costine in the director's position.
