Measurement of business performance in strategy research: a comparison of approaches

Article Abstract:

Business performance and strategy determination are modeled using two dimensions: (1) the use of financial and operating data to define business performance, and (2) the relative importance of primary and secondary data sources. The duo emphasis of the research and the two data sources addressed lead to the development of a four-cell matrix of performance and strategy assessment, which foreshadows the identification of ten approaches to operationalization problems. Various methods for measuring business performance are reviewed and evaluated, in an effort to identify certain measurement standards that are intended to improve operationalization and performance research.

Construct measurement in organizational strategy research : a critique and proposal

Article Abstract:

Studies of organizational strategy have tended to focus on substantive research, and have failed to develop adequate tools for the measurement of strategy-related variables and outcomes. Consequently, there is a need to emphasize measurement-oriented research in this field, perhaps as an integral first step in the research design. A critical review of construct measurement techniques leads to the development of key criteria for measuring strategies and a few recommendations for integrating strategic concepts and strategy measurements. 10
