Gaining competitive advantage from information technology

Article Abstract:

The effective introduction of information technology (IT) into organizational operations as a means for enhancing competitive advantage will depend on the ability of managers to integrate IT strategies into corporate objectives. Successful IT integration would require managers who possess technical skills and who acknowledge the need for IT in the work structure; the active involvement of workers in the decision making process regarding technology introduction; and the conversion of centralized IT departments into decentralized, line-type structures; and the establishment of employee selection and training procedures that recognize the importance of technological skill. The use of IT by manufacturing, retail, financial services and hotel industries are discussed.

Strategy and organization

Article Abstract:

There are advantages and disadvantages to strategic alliances with Japanese firms. Collaboration has been viewed as a way to reduce development costs and save time. Some economists accuse collaboration between companies as being collusion and restraint of trade. Other factors affecting partnerships include: different levels of internationalization between the participants; suspicion of the other partner's intentions; fear of becoming dependent upon a foreign partner; and differences in research and development methods between the United States and Japan.
