Land transfer for dump site blocked

Article Abstract:

Interior Sec Bruce Babbitt opposed California's purchase of federally owned land in San Bernardino County, CA, for use as a dump for nuclear waste until legal requirements were met. Proponents of the transfer claimed that there was little risk of contamination of underground water.

Alice Springs dam project blocked

Article Abstract:

The Australia Ministry for Aboriginal Affairs permanently blocked a proposed dam on the Todd River near the Northern Territory city of Alice Springs. The flood-control project was opposed by Aborigines who claimed it would destroy sacred sites.
