THE APPALACHIAN BASIN IS THE BIRTH PLACE OF THE AMERICAN OIL INDUSTRY, AND IS STILL THE NATION'S MOST ACTIVE AREA IN TERMS OF WELLS DRILLED. OIL AND GAS PRODUCTION IS SMALL, BUT WILDCATTERS SEE CERTAIN DISTINCT ADVANTAGES TO EXPLORATION IN THE AREA - IT'S ECONOMICAL, AND IT'S CLOSE TO THE FACTORIES OF THE NORTHEAST. BETTER THAN 90 PER CENT OF ALL HOLES DUG IN OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA AND WEST VIRGINIA ARE PRODUCERS, THOUGH THEY ARE USUALLY SHALLOW.
