Freezing the master production schedule under rolling planning horizons

Article Abstract:

Manufacturing entities usually have a master production schedule (MPS) that is tied to a materials requirement planning system (MRPS) in such a way as to assure smooth operations. However, the MPS can and often is interrupted by sales forecasting, customer orders, economic conditions, and other factors; this in turn affects the MRPS, which results in higher production, inventory, and other costs. This can be prevented by freezing the MPS. The relationship of three factors on freezing MPS is studied: the method, the part of MPS that is frozen, and the length of time it is frozen. Results indicate that no significant damage is done by freezing MPS up to 50% of the planning horizon.

Strategic interpolative design of dynamic manufacturing systems layouts

Article Abstract:

A proactive strategic technique for the design of dynamic layouts for the expansion stage of manufacturing systems is presented. The technique involves the estimate of the probable scenarios of the system's requirements at its level of maturity, the development of mature layouts, and the interpolation of intermediate layouts. A linear programming model that supports the proactive technique is presented for manufacturing systems that have rigid facilities. The model produces optimal layouts for all intermediate expansion stages in an efficient manner.
