France moves to 'Maastricht' approval

France passed legislation to ease the ratification of the Treaty on European Union. The treaty establishes a single monetary unit in Europe and cedes some national authority over foreign and military policy to the European Community (EC). Action on the treaty in other EC countries is detailed.

Chirac inaugurated as France's president

Chirac was inaugurated on May 17, 1995 in Paris, France, and chose Alain Juppe as France's new premier. Chirac pledged his primary concern to remedy France's high unemployment in his address. Juppe announced his cabinet selections on May 18, 1995.
