Financing small business creation: the case of Chinese and Korean immigrant entrepreneurs

Article Abstract:

Research conducted at the US Bureau of the Census, Center for Economic Studies has proven that supportive peer and community subgroups are not the main providers of start-up capital for immigrant Chinese/Korean entrepreneurs. Although the research showed that capital derived from family wealth holdings is the major single funding source, financial institutions provide the majority of loans. Chinese/Korean entrepreneurs are leaning away from the tradition of borrowing from family and friends for start-up capital, and starting to put their trust in traditional loan institutions.

Analysis of young, small firms that have closed: delineating successful from unsuccessful closures

Article Abstract:

A study of small ventures that were started between 1989 and 1992 and shut down between 1993 and 1996, shows that successful and unsuccessful small-businesses demonstrate clearly different reasons for closing down. The findings show that owners usually claimed their ventures were successful, even though they were about to be closed down. Paradoxically, successful small firms closed down for moving on to greener pastures. Thus, terming all closures as failures is not correct.
