Databases offer accountants advantages over spreadsheets in that databases give access to programmed data as often as needed. Spreadsheets require accountants to reenter data and reformat headers, columns and rows for each new spreadsheet. Database output resembles spreadsheets in that files are arranged in columns with headers and the data under each header can be either numeric or alpha and can be formatted like a spreadsheet. The database language used for programming is similar to setting up macros in a spreadsheet. Databases are becoming more use friendly and popular and will be the 'number crunchers' of the future, ensuring that time involved in training and programming in a database environment will be beneficial for accountants.

Educating upper management on basic accounting concepts is an integral part of the financial reporting process. Effective accounting professionals recognize that such training ensures that any financial information conveyed is understood. Teaching techniques must be tailored to the learning style of the manager concerned. Determining if the manager has a hands-on, visual, or auditory learning style can be very useful. The use of clearly defined terminology, appropriate presentation methods and positive nonverbal communication are also recommended.

New accountants who want to make a good impression should evaluate procedures in their office and the sources of power before determining what their behavior will be.
