Covering-location models for emergency situations that require multiple response units

Article Abstract:

Formulations of location covering models are based on the assumption that demand is covered if there exists one available unit within a specified distance of its location. The assumption is reasonable only if demands require only one unit to respond to them. New deterministic coverage models have been devised for application to two multiple-unit situations. A set covering location model is presented to solve the problem involving the allocation of fire trucks in an area in which demands often require multiple fire trucks to be within a reasonable distance for coverage. The problem requires finding the minimum number of units and their locations to cover demand at all nodes.

Optimizing resource acquisition decisions by stochastic programming

Article Abstract:

The application of stochastic programming to strategic planning decisions involving resource acquisition is described. A decomposition method is proposed which exploits stochastic programming and mixed integer programming model structures simultaneously. The method is then applied to fuel contract and plant construction decisions faced by an electric utility.
