National Semiconductor Corp. delivered on expectations that it would post a large loss as it struggled with sluggish demand and falling prices. The company reported a loss of $212.4 million including charges for an acquisition and restructuring for the fourth quarter ending May 31, 1998. The company warned last month that it would lose money in the fourth quarter because of weak demand for chips used in PCs and computer networks.

The company fell short of earnings predictions for the second-quarter of 1998. However, Intel made comments that could mean a leveling out of its fall in profits. Micron Technology Inc. posted a lower-than-expected loss for the 1998 fiscal fourth-quarter. The financial figures showed that memory chip prices were beginning to stabilize. For the quarter ending on September 3, 1998, Micron posted $89.1 million in net losses. During the same period in 1997, the company posted $72.1 million in net income. Micron is expected to post a 54 cents per share loss.
