The specialty chemicals industry is fragmented and is characterized by many firms operating in a large number of markets and in many geographic areas in the US and abroad. Normal industry competition has increased in the 1990s, and earnings are also being impacted by the slowing economies of Asia and South America. Stocks in the specialty chemicals industry are not timely for 1998, but several have total return potential for the years 2001-2003.
