Chretien offers Quebec autonomy plan

Chretien introduced legislation that will give Quebec a greater voice in resolving constitutional issues and recognition as a 'distinct society.' The terms of the legislation are described. Lucien Bouchard plans to succeed Jacques Parizeau as premier of Quebec and leader of the Parti Quebecois.

Canada: Chretien leads South Asia trade mission

Article Abstract:

Canada Prime Minister Jean Chretien and key business executives traveled to South Asia to promote better trade between the region and Canada. Trade agreements worth a total of $6.4 billion were approved and relations were strengthened overall by trips to India, Indonesia, Pakistan and Malaysia.

Chretien makes Latin trade trip

Article Abstract:

Chretien visited Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Costa Rica during a trade mission from Jan 19-30, 1995. The trip resulted in $2 billion worth of trade contracts being signed. Accompanying Chretien on his trip were 250 Canadian business officials.
