Breaking your backlog

Article Abstract:

Managers can encourage their employees to reduce accumulated work using specific techniques. These employee motivation techniques include asking employees to help determine the cause of the backlog, assigning workload fairly, discussing which tasks have to be done first and creating short-term objectives and recording decrease in backlogs. Additional techniques include informing employees of their progress in backlog reduction, giving financial rewards and other incentives, supplying needed equipment and materials, telling employees what to expect on future workload and communicating with divisions affected by the backlog.

Pres Manager Ted Haslam of Travelers Managed Disability Services of Atlanta, GA, recommends that companies give proper attention to employee disability claims instead of countering them. Such an approach improves personnel morale and increases company efficiency.
