Bell Atlantic in Settlement with CWA

Article Abstract:

The Communications Workers of America has reached a two-year agreement with Bell Atlantic Corp. to bring an end to a two-day strike by its East Coast telephone workers. Bell Atlantic employees represented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers also reached a settlement with the company in a separate agreement. The CWA negotiated an agreement for the workers which will increase their wages by as much as 3.8% retroactive to August 9 and also increase their pensions by 11% to 20%.

Centennial Cellular to sell 93% stake to Welsh Carson firm for $1.31 billion

Article Abstract:

Centennial Cellular Corp. has reached an agreement to sell a 93% share to Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe for cash and stock worth $1.31 billion. Welsh Carson will also assume $515 million in debt as part of the agreement. Centennial is the most recent small wireless-telephone operator to be acquired by a financial party. Welsh Carson is a company that specializes in buyouts. Welsh Carson and its investment partners will own 93% of Centennial according to the deal.

MCI WorldCom plans Internet service for residential customers nationwide

Article Abstract:

Timothy Price, president of MCI WorldCom's communications division announced that the company would offer Internet access nationwide via the UUNet Internet backbone, an ISP owned by the telecom giant. The firm currently offers the access to medium-large business, but is now expected to offer it to everyone, including residential customers.
