Behind the Decline in Pension Costs

Article Abstract:

The pension costs of major corporations have been decreasing. For example, in the period 1982-84, International Paper's pension-fund costs dropped seventy-one per cent. These costs have dropped because of layoffs, early-retirement programs, shrinking inflation, plant closings, and other factors. The decline in union power, terminated plans, and pension alternatives like Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) will continue this trend.
