Are tradeoffs inherent in diversification moves? A simultaneous model for type of diversification and mode of expansion decisions

Article Abstract:

A study exploring the premise that a company's decision to diversify is determined by antecedent factors such as industry structural conditions and the firm's available resources was conducted. Specifically, the study tested hypotheses for the tradeoffs between the type of diversification and the mode of expansion decisions. It examined the interrelationships between the mode of expansion, access to internal or external funds, availability of knowledge-based resources, availability of physical resources, and the expansion into related versus unrelated markets. The findings provide strong support for the reciprocity hypothesis and provides insights into how antecedent factors affect the trade-offs associated with the simultaneous decision.

Using on-line sensors in statistical process control

Article Abstract:

A two-phase procedure for combining an on-line sensor and a control chart, with the goal of enhancing statistical process control decisions, is introduced. Phase one involves the constant monitoring of a production process by a sensor, while phase two involves the selection and inspection of sample items from the process. The sample size and control limit of the control chart and a decision rule for transmitting sensor warning signals are determined via a mathematical model, which is based on the assumption if a weak relationship between the sensor measurement and the process condition. A numerical search is used as basis for the generation of a solution algorithm.
