Article Abstract:
The dynamic mating problem is examined in the context of flat panel display manufacturing. In the process, the quality or performance of the end product depends upon properties of the components to be assembled, which are not constant from part to part. The tradeoff between the increase in the potential value of products made possible by bypassing the 'mating' of components with various characteristic 'types' and the inventory costs incurred due to the delay in mating is analyzed. The dynamic mating problem is modeled as a Markov Decision Process and the structure of the optimal policy for special cases is characterized. A heuristic policy for a more general case is presented and compared against the optimal policy. Computational results show the effectiveness of the heuristic for various cases.

Article Abstract:
A new structure for economically-based sequential inspection plans is developed for use in motor vehicle emission testing. The structure allows for multiple attributes, multiple sources of randomness, misclassification of inspected items, and adjustment of cost parameters to produce desirable classical properties. Specific sequential plans are developed for the Environmental Protection Agency's motor vehicle certification program and are applied retrospectively to vehicles tested in the past. The use of such plans in the past could have saved resources while resulting in no significant degradation in performance. Both the structure and computational methods used have potential application to other sampling inspection problems. (Reprinted by Permission of Publisher.)

Article Abstract:
The problem of sequential testing of automobiles for emission levels in exhaust fumes is addressed for economic optimization. The models developed account for multiple attribute, randomness from several sources, potentialities of misclassified items during testing, and cost parameter adjustments. The models are applied retrospectively to testing and test results in order to determine a sequential schedule for testing vehicles under Environmental Protection Agency standards. The models may also prove to have applications in other situations involving random sampling inspections.
