A growing number of small businesses are joining purchasing pools to solve the problem of finding affordable health insurance for employees. Health-insurance purchasing co-ops also pool purchasing to reduce premiums. In addition, they try to improve insurance and health-care options.

The number of small businesses with retirement plans increased 2% to 24% between 1993 and 1996. Choices for small firms include defined-benefit plans and defined-contribution plans, such as 401(k) plans, profit-sharing, SIMPLE IRAs and SEP IRAs.
