Amazon.com had plans for mobile commerce, predicting that soon, all consumers would be buying books and other items off of Amazon's Web site using mobile communications. Although this seemed to be a promising direction, the company has failed so far to deliver due to the collapse of wireless Web services in general.

MAP Mobile Communications' SmartBeep has run a successful ad campaign, first on TV, then the same ad on its Website. The agency that created the ad, McKinney & Silver of Raleigh, NC, sought the permissions necessary to do so at the outset, when it was negotiating the rights for the television ad. The payment of fees to talent agents for using actors in commercials are standard procedure, but what about the 30,000 consumers who have thus far downloaded a copy of the ad and emailed it to friends for no fee.
