A vision for change

Article Abstract:

Management accountants in Nepal's Lumbini Rana-Ambika Eye Hospital are transforming other people's lives through the use of the latest in computer technology. These professionals are employing a computer and off-the-shelf accounting and database software to generate information banks that will help the medical staff in treating eye patients more effectively in the coming years. Some of the programs include Quicken from Intuit Inc. and Paradox from Borland International. The resulting database stores data on age, geographical district, diagnosis, treatment and location of care for patients. As a result, the hospital is increasingly becoming self-sufficient. This account demonstrates how management accountants can maximize information for their customers and co-workers through the use of computer technology.

The hidden cost of business PCs

Article Abstract:

Most microcomputer users say they are more productive on the job because of automation, according to a survey of personal computer (PC) users at American Electric Power. Nevertheless, the PC users do not always know why they are more productive when they have a microcomputer in use. Most firms can easily afford the $5,000 to $8,000 cost of a PC system, including both software and hardware. The most effective way to analyze the advantages of computerization are via hard dollar savings. Some of the problems in assuming soft dollar cost economies are the ability to handle additional analyses and time savings.
