Dynamic spatial regulation in the bacterial cell

Article Abstract:

Regulation of the bacterial cell in all functions must be understood in the context of a 3-D grid. Discoveries in the last decade of the 20th century are emphasized. The history of prokaryotic biology in the 20th century is briefly considered. Topics include cytokinesis, chromosome segregation, asymmetric division and cell fate, the division septum as an organelle for establishing cell fate, membrane sequestration and regulated proteolysis.

Regulation of auxin response by the protein kinase PINOID

Article Abstract:

Regulation in plants of auxin response by the protein kinase PINOID is discussed. Arabidopsis plants with PINOID (PID) gene mutations have a pleiotropic shoot phenotype mimicking that of plants grown on auxin transport inhibitor or plants mutated for the auxin efflux carrier PINFORMED (PIN) with various defects. PID was cloned and found to be transiently expressed in the embryo and in starting floral anlagen. That shows a specific role for PID in promoting primordium development.

act up controls actin polymerization to alter cell shape and restrict hedgehog signaling in the Drosophila eye disc

Article Abstract:

A novel Drosophila gene, act up (acu), controls actin polymerization to alter cell shape and restrict hedgehog signaling in the eye disc of the insect. It appears that dynamic changes in actin filaments may change cell shape, controlling signal movement to coordinate a differentiation wave.
