Transformation of the antibacterial agent norfloxacin by environmental mycobacteria
Article Abstract:
The potential of environmental bacteria to biotransform antibacterial agent Norfloxacin is investigated. Results show that biotransformation reduces the antibacterial activity of norfloxacin and therefore my serve as a mechanism facilitating fluoroquinolone resistance.

Fungal biotransformation of 6-nitrochrysene
Article Abstract:
The biotransformation of 6-nitrochrysene by using the fungus Cunninghamella elegans has been studied. 6-nitrochrysene is weakly mutagenic in bacteria and causes tumors in mice. Strains of C. elegans were grown in cultures with 2.0 mg of 6-nitrochrysene dissolved 0.5 ml of dimethyl sulfoxide. Results show that 74% of the 6-nitrochrysene has been metabolized to two isomeric sulfate conjugates. These conjugates were identified as 6-nitrochrysene 1-sulfate and 2-sulfate by high-performance liquid chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectroscopy.
