Brinker is a sequence-specific transcriptional repressor in the Drosophila embryo

Article Abstract:

Results show that Brinker is a sequence-specific transcriptional repressor that binds to the tolloid gene leading to tolloid transcription repression. Data indicate that Brinker is expressed in the neurogenic ectoderm in response to Dpp signaling and maternal Dorsal gradient.

Transcriptional regulation of the Drosophila gene zen by competing Smad and Brinker inputs

Article Abstract:

Research examines the regulation of the zen gene of Drosophila that is the target of the Decapentaplegic (Dpp) signaling pathway implicated in the blastoderm formation. Results show that the Dpp signal transducer phosphorylated Mad along with Brinker regulator determine spatial limits of the zen gene transcription.

Different core promoters possess distinct regulatory activities in the Drosophila embryo

Article Abstract:

Many examples of shared enhancers interacting with only a subset of target promoters exist. Specific enhancer-promoter interactions sometimes depend on promoter competition, by which activation of a preferred target promoter stops expression of linked genes. A transgenic embryo assay has been used to find evidence that promoter selection is affected by the TATA factor. Some upstream activators, such as Ftz, prefer TATA-containing promoters. Some other activators, including Dorsal, work as well on both classes of promoters, those with and without TATA. Different core promoters appear to have distinctly different regulatory activities.
