Stunting in an Andean community: prevalence and etiology

Article Abstract:

Possible causes of linear growth (height) retardation in a rural agricultural community of the Andes in Ecuador have been studied. Diets are deficient to a moderate degree in energy, protein, vitamin A and calcium, and more deficient in zinc. The water supply and hygiene are such that risks of infection are relatively high. Retarded growth has been found to be common for boys and girls, ages 1-5, with both diet and chronic disease likely factors.

Adaptive dimensions of health research among indigenous Siberians

Article Abstract:

The role of biological adaptations to the regional conditions in shaping the health transition that northern populations experience with economic development is examined. The influence of metabolic adaptation on cardiovascular risk factors observed among indigenous Siberians in the post-Soviet period has highlighted the importance of using an evolutionary approach into health research among northern populations.

The effect of rainfall during gestation and early childhood on adult height in a foraging and horticultural society of the Bolivian Amazon

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to assess the effect of rainfall patterns on adult height during weaning and the gestation or birth year among Bolivian women. Results revealed that women displayed a difference in adult height and presented possible reasons in support of the findings.
