Starvation-survival of a p-nitrophenol-degrading bacterium

Article Abstract:

The preparation of a bacterial inoculum by starvation is discussed. This involved an investigation of the starvation-survival of a p-nitrophenol (PNP)-degrading isolate taken from an industrial waste lagoon. Changes in cell viability, morphology and its resuscitation on PNP and alternative organic substrates weredetermined as the isolate was subjected to nutrient deprivation. Results indicate that starvation causes the filaments to fragment into individual cells.

Isolation and characterization of a sulfate-reducing bacterium that anaerobically degrades alkanes

Article Abstract:

A new bacterial strain isolated from an estuarine sediment with a history of chronic petroleum contamination. This strain has been found to be able to degrade alkanes and reduce sulfate levels. It is short, nonmotile, non-spore-forming and gram-negative rod. This strain was found to grow on alkanes despite strictly anoxic conditions and is mesophilic in nature. The strain culture was not preserved and amounts of a pure bacterial culture were found to be rare.

Sonication-dependent electroporation of the erythromycin-producing bacterium Saccharopolyspora erythraea

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the development of an electrotransformation protocol that is applicable to all strains of Saccharopolyspora erythraea. The method was also used for the introduction of DNA into other actinomycetes which includes Streptomyces rimosus, Saccharopolyspora hirsuta and Streptomyces lividans. The protocol appears to have general utility for the molecular genetic manipulation of this class of filamentous microorganisms.
