Sex and the single splice

Article Abstract:

Drosophila male courtship is found to offer a unique experimental system to uncover the molecular and neural basis of genetically reprogrammed behavior. This behavior that relies on the single splicing of the fruitless transcript and on specific olfactory-based neuronal circuit is demonstrated.

Neural circuitry that governs Drosophila male courtship behavior

Article Abstract:

Evidences are presented that the neurons in the male Drosophila are directly and specifically involved in male courtship behavior and that at least some of them are interconnected in a circuit. This circuit includes olfactory neurons required for the behavioral responses to sex pheromones.

Fruitless splicing specifies male courtship behavior in Drosophila

Article Abstract:

Drosophila melanogaster males are found to perform an elaborate and innate courtship ritual directed toward females. It is seen that the male courtship requires products of the fruitless gene, which is spliced differently in males and females.
