Recent developments in computational approaches for uncovering genomic homology

Article Abstract:

The different computational techniques that are currently available for the detection of genomic homology are discussed, even when the actual similarity between genomic segments is low or at first nonexistent. It can therefore be expected that, as more genomes of closely related organisms are becoming available, analyses of genomic homology between more species using the methods described here will further greatly enhance our insight of genome evolution.

The thrifty epigenotype: an acquired and heritable predisposition for obesity and diabetes?

Article Abstract:

An analysis based on the thrifty genotype hypothesis, genetic canalization and the thrifty phenotype hypothesis is described to understand the reasons for the heritability of the syndromes and the environmental contribution to susceptibility of obesity and type 2 diabetes. The benefits of the models are discussed and parts of them are applied to develop a 'thrifty epigenotype' hypothesis.
