Radishes gone wild

Article Abstract:

A recent survey of population of radishes have reported that in every population surveyed only hybrids are present, suggesting that wild populations of the parental species were continuously hybridized out of existence in California. Findings provide genetic evidence that two plant species can be simultaneously hybridized out of existence, at least locally, and have clear implications for the conservation of species.

New gene, new disease

Article Abstract:

Evidence of a new disease emerging not because of interspecies or interpopulation transfer of a toxin gene that changed previously benign microorganisms into an important pathogen is presented. The first evidence of virulence gene transfer in a fungal, rather than a bacterial system is presented.
