Quantitative real-time reverse transcription-PCR analysis of deformed wing virus infection in the honeybee (Apis mellifera L.)

Article Abstract:

The use of TaqMan real-time quatitative to reverse transcription (RT)-PCR is reported in order to identify deformed wing virus (DWV) in various life stages of honeybees and to determine the relative virus levels in individual adults with and without deformed wings. The variability in virus titer reflects the different abilities of bees to resist DWV infection and replication.

Prevalence and transmission of honeybee viruses

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the transmission mechanisms of six honeybee viruses, in honeybee colonies, by reverse transcription methods. The virus status of individual queens were evaluated by examining the presence of viruses in the queen's feces and tissues including hemolymph, gut, ovaries, spermatheca, head and eviscerated body.

Bacteriocin from honeybee beebread Enterococcus avium, active against Listeria monocytogenes

Article Abstract:

Enterococcus avium isolated from Apis mellifera beebread produces a thermoresistant bacteriocin with a strain-dependent inhibitory effect on Listeria and without effect on gram-negative bacteria. Genetic analyses revealed no extrachromosomal material in enterococcus avium.
