Potential reproductive rates and the operation of sexual selection

Article Abstract:

The relationships between mating competition, operational sex ratio (OSR), potential rates of reproduction by males and females and relative parental expenditure by the two sexes were analyzed. The analysis showed that with a fixed parental expenditure, the potential reproductive rate has the most effect on OSR, which is the ratio of males which are ready to mate to females that are ready to mate. On the other hand, the potential reproductive rate is influenced most by the relative proportion of time or energy expended by the two sexes on their progeny. Based on the analysis, a model for the factors affecting the OSR is presented.

Repertoires, territory size and mate attraction in Western Meadowlarks

Article Abstract:

There is a positive correlation between repertoire characteristics which include size and uniqueness and territory sizes in western meadowlarks. A huge territory and a large and distinctive repertoire seem to give an advantage to the male in finding a mate. Repertoire characteristics may be useful to a female in defining territory. A system needs to be evolved whereby the female should be able to decide a territory because male western meadowlarks come to settle on the territories before the coming of the females.
