Origins of cell polarity

Article Abstract:

The understanding of cell polarity has evolved during the past several years. Much of the study on cell polarity has concentrated on budding yeast and mammalian epithelial cells because of their high degree of cellular symmetry. Recent studies suggest that cell polarity is controlled by intrinsic and extrinsic spatial cues. These cues dictate the formation and orientation of sites marked by the cue. A model representing the molecular pathways for cell polarity development in budding yeast and molecular epithelial cells is included.

Three-dimensional structure of the armadillo repeat region of beta-catenin

Article Abstract:

Beta-catenin is needed for cadherin-based cell adhesion and Wnt/Wingless growth factor signalling. Its interactions with cadherins, Tcf-family transcription factors and the tumor suppressor gene product Adenomatous Polyposis Coli (APC), are mediated by an amino acid sequence motif known as the armadillo repeat. The structure of the protease-resistant part of beta-catenin containing the armadillo repeat has been determined.

The RNA world of the nucleolus: two major families if small RNAs defined by different box elements with related functions

Article Abstract:

A novel box element was detected in yeast and vertebrate snoRNAs lacking box C and D elements, which are essential for accumulation of snoRNA. Designated the ACA box family, it contained a consensus ACA triplet located upstream of the 3' end of the RNA. Mutational analysis of yeast ACA snoRNA revealed that the ACA box is involved in the maintenance of snoRNA stability in the nucleolus.
