Non-linear patterns of growth in very low birth weight infants

Article Abstract:

Increases in weight, length and head circumference were studied in a group of 87 very-low-birth-weight infants. Deviations from linear growth were recorded and highly significant polynomial oscillation was found for all three factors. Weight amplitudes in males were greater than in females and greater in infants appropriate for gestational age than in those small for date. Clinical events, methods of feeding and homeostatic regulation can be explanations as can process of adjustment of catch-up for the babies small for date.
