Nanoscale investigation of pathogenic microbial adhesion to a biomaterial

Article Abstract:

The initial events in microbial adhesion were examined by simulating the approach and contact between a planktonic cell, immobilized on an atomic force microscope (AFM) cantilever, and a biomaterial or biofilm substrate. Although steric interactions play an important role in the approach of silicon nitride probes to P.aeruginosa, they cannot explain the adhesive interactions seen in C.parapsilosis systems and it was also observed that the biofilm showed an initial repulsive force that is a combination of electostatic and steric interactions between the polymer brushes of cell probe and the film.

Metamorphosis of scleratinian coral in response to microbial biofilms

Article Abstract:

Microorganisms are known to induce settlement or metamorphosis in a wide range of invertebrate species. The community structure of developing coral reef biofilms and the role they play in triggering metamorphosis of scleratin coral are studied.

Molecular profiling of rhizosphere microbial communities associated with healthy and diseased black spruce (Picea mariana) seedlings grown in a nursery

Article Abstract:

Bacterial and fungal populations of healthy and rotted black spruce seedlings are compared. The methodological approach described in this analysis is very helpful and the results are discussed.
