Molecular mimicry and the generation of host defense protein diversity

Article Abstract:

A large data base of orthologous proteins in human and other vertebrate species was analyzed to identify common patterns of molecular evolution and their underlying selective forces. The results showed that proteins involved in antimicrobial host defenses such as ligands, receptors and plasma proteins are about 3-fold more structurally divergent than other proteins, giving rise to species restriction of function. The results indicate a role for pathogenic microorganisms in inducing protein diversity in host vertebrates.

Emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases: Influenza as a prototype of the host-pathogen balancing act

Article Abstract:

The aim is to prepare for unpredictable event of a global influenza pandemic and to minimize the burden of highly predictable, seasonal influenza epidemics exemplify the challenges of being ahead of influenza virus, a constantly evolving pathogen. The importance of understanding host-pathogen interactions is underscored by emergence of virulent H5N1 avian influenza viruses and their transmission to humans, and the potential pandemic threat they pose.

Crystal structure of the DsbB-DsbA complex reveals a mechanism of disulfide bond generation

Article Abstract:

The crystal structure of the DsbB-DsbA complex is determined to understand the disulfide bond formation. The results have concluded that the DsbA-induced relocation of DsbB cysteines Cys104 and Cys130 have played a vital role in DsbB's ability to oxidize more oxidizing DsbA.
