Linking chordate gene networks to cellular behavior in ascidians

Article Abstract:

Embryos of simple chordates called ascidians have few cells, develop rapidly, and are transparent, enabling the in vivo fluorescent imaging of labeled cell lineages. Ascidians are also simple genetically, with limited redundancy and compact regulatory and this cellular and genetic simplicity is being exploited to link comprehensive gene networks to the cellular events underlying morphogenesis.

Regulation of ADMP and BMP2/4/7 at opposite embryonic poles generates a self-regulating morphogenetic field

Article Abstract:

Quadruple knockdown of ADMP and BMP2.4.7 in Xenopus embryos eliminates self-regulation, causing ubiquitous neural induction throughout the ectoderm. By transplanting dorsal or ventral wild-type grafts into ADMP/BMP2/4/7-depleted hosts it is demonstrated that both poles serve as signaling centers that can induce histotypic differentiation over considerable distances.
