A successful research career not only requires an aptitude for science but also skills like management communication and grant writing. Some of the universities which aim to teach these important skills to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty include University College London, Burroughs Wellcome Fund in partnership with Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Watson School of Biological Sciences.

A wakeup call for science faculty

Article Abstract:

Most scientists believe that by changing the way introductory science courses are taught in colleges, more students can be attracted to pursue science careers. It is also believed that at the same time encouraging a positive public attitude about science can develop into a successful modern society.

The success of the John Hopkins University Postdoctoral Association (JHPDA) in Baltimore, Maryland is discussed. JHPDA has helped postdoctoral fellows at the hospital to receive health insurance, dental benefits, satellite parking and uniform stipends.
