Integron diversity in heavy-metal-contaminated mine tailings and inferences about integron evolution

Article Abstract:

Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is the flow of genetic information across species boundaries and integrons are HGT systems containing elements necessary for site-specific recombination and expression of foreign DNA. Integrons in an environmental microbial community were studied along with an investigation of integron evolution.

Multiple-locus sequence typing and analysis of toxin genes in Bacillus cereus food-borne isolates

Article Abstract:

Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) is used to characterize any food-borne isolates of Bacillus cereus. The results have shown that horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is a vital element in shaping the population structure of the Bacillus cereus complex and has provided evidence of reticulate evolution within this complex.

Evidence for horizontal transfer of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase genes

Article Abstract:

PCR are used to rapidly identify and isolate 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase genes from bacteria. Results reveal that 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase genes did not evolve vertically but instead have undergone horizontal gene transfer.
