Article Abstract:
Acetate-fed upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors containing Methanosaeta concilii GP6, immobilized Methanosarcina mazeii S-6 or a combination of both species are used in studying the immobilization patterns of two different species of methanogens utilizing acetate and their interactions. Results indicated that the reactor with M. mazeei S-6 had the fastest immobilization time. The reactor also had the highest effluent concentration of acetate while the reactor with a combination of both species had the lowest effluent concentration.

Article Abstract:
Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATH1 null mutants, which encode vacuolar acid trehalase, grow to higher cell densities on glucose than reference strains. This increase in cell density is attributed to the URA3 gene added as part of the disruption of yeast strains. Significant errors result from not using a control strain with matching auxotrophic markers. Auxotrophic markers involved in amino acid biosynthesis are not well-suited for disrupting genes in intermediary carbon metabolism.

Article Abstract:
The production of hydrolytic and esterifying activities of Pseudomonas fragi CRDA 037 grown on a whey-based medium was studied at various temperatures over time. The optimal temperature was observed to be critical and different for the production of both activities. The highest hydrolytic activity was found in bacteria cultivated at between 24 deg C and 27 deg C, while the highest production of ethyl valerate was observed by utilizing biomass grown at 15 deg C.
