Article Abstract:
The vegetative proteins of Bacillus subtilis were characterized by the construction of two-dimensional (2-D) protein gels from crude extracts of the microbe. The 2-D gel electrophoresis of Bacillus subtilis extracts indicated the role of osmotic stress and glucose starvation in modulating the synthesis of enzymes involved in glycolysis and amino acid metabolism. Furthermore, 2-D gel electrophoresis of Bacillus subtilis crude extracts permitted the identification and separation of 600 distinct protein spots.

Article Abstract:
The effects of ethanol, heat shock and salt stress on the protein profile of Bacillus subtilis were analyzed by high resolution two-dimensional (2-D) polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. High resolution 2-D polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic analysis of Bacillus subtilis stress proteins indicated the presence of stress-specific proteins that were triggered by ethanol, heat shock and salt stress. Furthermore, general stress proteins were also activated by general stress induction mechanisms.

Article Abstract:
The phosphate-starvation-inducible or Psi proteins of Bacillus subtilis (Bs)strain 168 was analyzed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. Analysis of Psi protein products from wild-type and phoR Bs mutants indicated the presence of two classes of proteins. Furthermore, the Class I Psi proteins are Pho regulons that exhibited PhoP/R-dependence while the class II PhoR-independent proteins are induced by glucose starvation.
