Documenting the epidemiologic patterns of polyomaviruses in human populations by studying their presence in urban sewage

Article Abstract:

Human polyomaviruses in water samples could be used as a marker of fecal contamination. In a study of widely divergent areas of Europe and Africa, the JC and BK viruses were found in a high percentage of urban sewage samples.

Identification of human and animal adenoviruses and polyomaviruses for determination of sources of fecal contamination in the environment

Article Abstract:

The distribution of human adenoviruses (HAdV), porcine adenoviruses (PAdV), bovine adenoviruses (BAdV), and bovine polyomavirus (BPyV) are evaluated for slaughterhouse sludge and waste-water, for urban sewage, and for samples from a river potentially affected by animal fecal pollution. The results suggest that the assessment of HAdV, PAdV, and BPyV distribution will be a very useful tool for tracking the source of fecal contamination in the environment and in water.

Characterization of a strain of infectious hepatitis E virus isolated from sewage in an area where hepatitis E is not endemic

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to characterize a strain of infectious hepatitis E virus (HEV) isolated from a sewage in the city of Barcelona, Spain, where HE was not endemic. The reverse transcriptase-PCR method was used to sequence the genomes of various HEV strains and identify HEV genomes in experimental and clinical samples. The recovery of infectious HEV from sewage raises the possibility of contamination of shellfish and the environment with HEV.
