Article Abstract:
The bacteria presumably involved in oxygen- or nitrate-dependent sulfide oxidation in the biofilters of a recirculating marine aquaculture system were identified, using a new application of reverse transcriptional-PCR denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis termed as differential-transcriptional (DT)-DGGE. For the organisms the psychology of their closest cultured relatives matched their DT-DGGE-inferred functions.

Article Abstract:
Strong nitrification at a pH around 4 was observed in biofilms grown on chalk particles and the hypotheses of the presence of less acidic microenvironments and/or the existence of acid-tolerant nitrifiers was investigated. Strong affinity to ammonia and possibly the expression of additional functions are adaptations that allow nitrifiers to cope with acidic conditions in biofilms and other habitats.

Article Abstract:
Eight anaerobic granular sludges are surveyed for Crenarchaeota using rRNA gene cloning. Group 1.3 Crenarchaeota represented up to 50% of Archaea and 25% of the total microbiota in five sludges.
