Article Abstract:
A protocol for polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-generated genomic fingerprints ws developed to facilitate identification of Azoarcus species. Repetitive intergenic sequence elements were the targets of the PCR. The process produced genomic fingerprints specific for particular species. Targeting transfer RNA genes resulted in the generation of more discriminating fingerprints. The species assignment derived from DNA fingerprinting was confirmed with the phylogenetic analysis of the DNA from the 16S ribosomal subunit.

Article Abstract:
The ineffective Rhizobia galegae strains, HAMBI 1207 and HAMBI 1209 nodulating Galega orientalis compete in a manner similar to that of the effective strain, HAMBI 1174. The plant yield and nodulation of the effective strains is reduced in the presence of ineffective nodulating strains. The inoculation response is low even with large doses of the inoculant. The polymerase chain reaction is a useful method for identification of Rhizobia strains even in dead cells and there is no modification of the strains.

Article Abstract:
Intergenic spacer PCR analysis of 16S-23S ribosomal DNA can distinguish between species of Bradyrhizobium and Rhizobium. This technique was used to analyze two rhizobial strains that occur as endophytes in rice roots.
