Detection and identification of gastrointestinal Lactobacillus species by using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and species-specific PCR primers
Article Abstract:
Species-specific PCR primers targeting the 16S-23S intergenic spacer region or 16S rRNA gene sequences can be used to identify different bacterial species residing in the gastrointestinal tract. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis is used to separate the mixture of 16S fragments.

Identification of Lactobacillus isolates from the gastrointestinal tract, silage, and yoghurt by 16S-23S rRNA gene intergenic spacer region sequence comparisons
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to identify Lactobacillus isolates from the gastrointestinal tract, silage, and yoghurt by 16S-23S rRNA gene intergenic spacer region sequence comparisons and PCR amplification. The V2-V3 region of the 16S rRNA gene was amplified and sequenced in the case of isolates whose spacer region sequences were less than 99% similar to that of a reference strain. Results demonstrate that comparison of the percentages of similarity of 16S-23S spacer region sequence of lactobacilli provides a practicalmethod of strain identification.
