PIE-1 is a bifunctional protein that regulates maternal and zygotic gene expression in the embryonic germ line of Caenorhabditis elegans
Article Abstract:
PIE-1 has been found to be a bifunctional protein regulating maternal/zygotic gene expression in the Caenorhabditis elegans embryonic germ line. It promotes germ cell fate by two mechanisms independent of one another.

Human SMG-1, a novel phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase-related protein kinase, associates with components of the mRNA surveillance complex and is involved in the regulation of nonsense-mediated mRNA decay
Article Abstract:
Human SMG-1, a novel phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase-related protein kinase has been found to associate with components of the mRNA surveillance complex. It is involved in the regulation of nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) and is a human ortholog of a product of Caenorhabditis elegans smg-1, which is one of its smg genes involved in NMD. A critical role in NMD is played by hSMG-1 through direct phosphorylation of hUPF1/SMG-2.
