Hox transcription factors and their elusive mammalian gene targets

Article Abstract:

The pathways involved in developmental and normal cellular processes are regulated by the Hox family of homeodomain transcription factors. A review is presented of the transcriptional and functional specificity brought out by Hox proteins with an overview of homeodomain-DNA interactions and the gain of binding specificity through cooperative binding with cofactors.

New saliva DNA collection method compared to buccal cell collection techniques for epidemiological studies

Article Abstract:

The DNA yield and quality from a novel whole-saliva collection device were compared with noninvasive methods such as cytobrush, foam swab and oral rinse tested on a sample of 17 adults. The quality and quantity of DNA obtained using whole saliva and oral-rinse methods were found to be superior to that of the cytobrush and foam swab methods.

Optimizing DNA yield from the buccal swabs in the elderly: attempts to promote buccal cell growth in culture

Article Abstract:

Explanation regarding participation in genetic studies that is limited by a volunteer's reluctance to donate blood samples is presented. In order to maximize the recovery of DNA from buccal swabs a protocol was generated where it was found that buccal swabs work well for the collection of DNA, especially nonclinic-based volunteers.
