HmsT, a protein essential for expression of the haemin storage (Hms+) phenotype of Yersinia pestis

Article Abstract:

The cloning and characterization of a gene, designated hmsT, which was observed outside the pgm locus that is necessary for the expression of the haemin storage (Hms+) phenotype in Yersinia pestis, are described. The mechanisms of temperature regulation of and haemin binding by the Hms system was undetermined. While it was demonstrated that HmsT may play a regulatory role, the evidence is not conclusive and regulatory roles for other Hms proteins are feasible.

The haemin storage (Hms+) phenotype of Yersinia pestis is not essential for the pathogenesis of bubonic plague in mammals

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to show the influence of the haemin storage (Hms) phenotype of Yersinia pestis on the pathogenesis of bubonic plague. Strains were stored in phosphate-buffered glycerol at -20 degrees C. Experimental results indicated that Hms- strains are slightly more virulent than Hms+, thus, confirming hat the Hms phenotype is not necessary for the pathogenesis of bubonic plague in mammals.

Yersiniabactin from Yersinia pestis: biochemical characterization of the siderophore and its role in iron transport and regulation

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the function supported by a siderophore-dependent iron transport system of the pathogenic yersiniae in the pathogenesis of the organisms. The structure of the siderophore generated by yersinia enterocolitica was examined. Results indicated that the addition of purified Ybt from Y pestis improved iron uptake by a siderophore-negative strain of Y pestis.
